Chapter 1
Rylee stepped of the taxi and uncomfortably walked up to the small house.
“Home sweet home.” she mumbled lightly under her breath.
The last time she had seen her mother was seven years ago on her 9th birthday. Her parents split that night and ever since then she had been living with her dad in Arizona, but that just changed. Her dad just recently died and now she was being forced to move in with her mom into a small house in Rodeo, California. It’s not that she didn’t like her mom, it was just for the last seven years Rylee had been living with her dad and now was afraid of how things would work out.
Rylee had dark brown hair, beautiful brown eyes, and was about 5’6. She was very unique and liked to stand out from others. Some called her a freak, but she didn’t seem to care. She was just herself and if they couldn’t live with that then that was simply their problem.
Rylee knocked on the door and waited for a response. The door soon flung open and a short lady greeted her happily with a hug.
“Oh Rylee, it’s been so long. Look at you you’re so grown up.” the lady said losing her tight grip around Rylee.
“Hi mom.” she said as she dropped her luggage.
“Come in and I’ll show you your room, hun.”
Rylee followed her mother up stairs to the second floor. The bedroom was like the rest of the house. Small. It was painted in light blue and had stars all over the ceiling. ‘I will defiantly need to change that.’ Rylee thought to herself.
“I want you to feel at home.” her mom said. Rylee rolled her eyes.
“Okay, thanks.” she replied gloomily but with some attitude. Her mom left and let her unpack her stuff and get situated. She tried to unpack her stuff but just ended up laying on the bed for what felt like eternity and crying herself to sleep.
*******
The next morning Rylee awoke to find herself lying on the same old hard bed that she had fallen asleep on the night before. She got up and got a few things out of her suitcase and headed to the bathroom to change. She put on a pair of old faded jeans and a plain black T-shirt. She was never one to over do the make up so she decided on black eyeliner and some black eye shadow. Before making her way to the kitchen for breakfast she stopped in her room and slipped on her pair of old beat up Converse.
The smell of bacon and eggs filled the air as she headed to the kitchen. She didn’t have much of an appetite so the smell almost made her feel sick. Her mom was sitting on the couch watching some stupid morning show.
“Well look who finally got up. I saved you a plate if your hungry.”
“I’m not hungry.” Rylee muttered in response.
She sat down next to her mom. “So, Rylee do you want to spend some time together, just like we used to?”
“Maybe later. I’m not feeling so well.”
“Oh, sweetie are you getting sick? You go back to bed and I’ll be right up when some of your favorite soup, okay?”
Rylee shook her head. “No, I just think I need some fresh air. I’m gonna go outside I’ll be back later.”
“Okay, hunny, be careful.”
Rylee’s POV
I walked to the backyard and found a hammock. I laid and closed my eyes and just thought about my old life. Only thing I really missed was my father. I didn’t have any real friends back in Arizona, but there were some people I could sorta get along with. Summer just finished up and now it’s September. That meant starting at a new school. I bet that the people there will be preppy or jocks. I personally hate both. I felt a leaf hit my nose. Must’ve fallen from some tree.
To my surprise I opened my eyes to see a guy sitting on his knees so he was eye level with me.
“What are you doing sneaking up on me like that!” I yelled. Okay so that wasn’t so nice. But I hate when I can’t have privacy.
“I’m sorry if I startled you.” he sat down next to me on the hammock. Wow, was he hot! But cute/hot boys only are one thing and that’s jerks.
“No. It’s okay. I‘m just in a pissy kind of mood” I said
“Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. You new here?”
“Yup. Just got to this shit hole yesterday.”
He laughed “It‘s not always that bad, trust me.”
“I just met you. Should I be trusting you?” I laughed
“You can decide that, so what brings to u to this “shit hole” anyway?” he asked
“My dad just died so I’m living with my mom now.” Suddenly his happy expression change to a duller, more serious one.
“I’m sorry. I know what it feels like to lose a parent. My dad died when I was 10.”
“I’m sorry too.” I said.
“Don’t worry about it you have nothing to be sorry about.” he smiled.
He was nice and I liked him he wasn’t a jerk but first impressions can be deceiving. Jesus, dont even get me started on his eyes! My favorite color of green.
“I’m Billie Joe by the way and I live next door.” he said as he pointed to the house right of mine.
“I’m Rylee. Nice to meet you.”
“Want me to show you around sometime?” Billie Joe asked as his eyes shined like emeralds. His eyes… I couldn’t stop looking at them!!
I nodded. “Yeah.”
“Well, then is tomorrow ok?”
“Sounds good to me.” Sounds good!? This is the best thing that’s happen to me for a long time. And it just sounds good? Ok so I’m not winning a zillion dollars or anything but I’ll take this for now.
