*Sigh* Life sucks. ************************************************************************
Part Five
Oh my god. Snow. Real snow. White little flakes of….snow! Holy shit!
“Erin! Erin! Wake up! Look! SNOW!”
“Wha--?” she said groggily, lifting her head off the pillow.
“Snow!” I said again.
She sat up straighter and looked out of the window.
“Oh, cool….,” she said, slightly awed.
Living in California, we had never seen snow before. It was amazing. Petite pale dancers, swirling through the heavens. So lost, yet with a sense of direction. Each individual and free.
The grass and concrete was already beginning to turn white. Everything looked like it had a layer of frosting.
“Hello? Earth to Karla. Come in Karla,” Erin said, waving a hand in front of my face and snapping me out of my trance. I grinned at her.
“Are you up for your first snowball fight ever?” I asked.
She blinked.
“I guess,” she said simply.
I frowned at her.
“Where’s your enthusiasm? Come on! It’s snow! This stuff has to be fun!” I said, pulling on a pair of jeans, and heavy sweatshirt. I withdrew gloves from my jacket pockets as Erin finally decided to get up.
“Can’t we eat breakfast first?” she yawned.
I gave her a look. She gave me one back. I sighed.
”Fine,” I said. As Erin went to go take a shower, I pulled my gloves and jacket back off and sat down by the window, watching the snow get heavier and heavier. Too bad school couldn’t exactly be cancelled. I mean, all we had to do was walk to classes….darn. But it was Saturday, so that didn’t really matter. The phone rang in the kitchen, and I instinctively knew it was Diana. She called me almost every morning.
“Guess what?!” I asked.
“What?”
“It’s snowing!!!” I squealed excitedly.
“Oh my God, really? You’re so lucky!” she said.
“Yeah, I know. I’m gonna go play in it…well, after I get breakfast, but then I will!” I said.
Diana laughed.
“Sounds like fun.”
“Oh, I bet it is! So, what are you up to?”
“Ugh. Nothing. Everything here is so boring. Nothing to do…no snow to play in…”
“Well, you won’t be bored for too long, ‘cause I’m gonna be home in just a month and a half.”
“Yay. I can’t wait. We’re going to have so much fun, like we used to.”
I frowned slightly.
“What do you mean, ‘like we used to’?”
“You haven’t exactly had a normal life for the past four months….we can go back to just hanging out and doing absolutely nothing. Besides being stupid, of course.”
”Yeah, I guess you’re right,” I said quietly.
“So, who won that Green Day tour thing?”
”I dunno. We don’t find out ‘til Monday.”
”Oh……have you heard from Maria lately?”
”Yeah, just spoke with her last night.”
”That’s good….oh my God, I can’t wait for you to come back!!” she squealed.
“I can’t either. Well, I’ll talk to you soon, k?”
“Okay. Bye,” Diana said.
“Bye,” I said, hanging up.
Maria and I talked on the phone almost every other day. She was a really fun person, easy to talk to. We laughed about random things, and she told me about my mother and her childhood. When I had asked her what she was like, she got sort of quiet.
“Well, she was very opinionated. Strong headed. Did what she wanted to, didn’t care much about what others thought. Sometimes I almost get her confused with you…I wonder if I’m really speaking to you, or her…you sound so much alike,” she had said.
Besides those depressing calls, I got more from Mike and Tre.
“He really wants to talk to you,” Mike had said one evening about Billie Joe.
“And I really don’t want to talk to him,” I said.
There was shuffling and noise on the other line.
“You better speak to him. He’s no fun to be around, always moping and sulking,” Tre said.
I rolled my eyes.
“What does he care?” I had asked him.
“More than you think, obviously. I think he might do something stupid,” he continued.
I furrowed my eyebrows.
“Like what?”
”Like…try to kill himself or something,” he said dramatically.
“Tre!” I heard Mike’s angry shout.
“Don’t talk like that,” I said quietly.
“Okay, okay, sorry. I was being stupid.”
”No shit,” Mike said, taking the phone away from Tre again.
I had many conversations like that, each ending with me refusing to talk to Billie when he picked up the phone. After each one of these calls, Erin would look at me.
“You can’t do this forever!”
I shrugged.
“I can try.”
”But, that’s horrible! How can you talk to those two, but ignore him. You’re killing him,” she had said.
I felt terribly guilty, and so I agreed. To talk to Billie Joe? No, of course not! I just decided to quit talking to all three of them, and got a new cell phone number.
I knew Diana would give them my new number, so I didn’t tell her what it was either. I just told her to call the phone in the dorm. She was angry at first, and didn’t talk to me for a week. But, then she gave up, and called me. She gave Billie Joe my dorm number, but I knew I could block his phone calls. I just went to the front office and told them I was receiving constant prank calls from the same numbers, over and over again. They blocked them for me. I hadn’t talked to Billie, Mike, or Tre in over two weeks.
“Jesus, you’re certainly spacing out a lot today,” Erin said, snapping her fingers in front of my face.
“Oh, sorry,” I said, as she put on her jacket and gloves.
I put mine on as well, and pulled a scarf around my neck. We headed outside into the cold.
“Wheeeeee,” I said, spinning around in the snow.
Erin laughed and dug her hands into her jacket pockets.
“Come on, it’s so cold. Let’s get some hot breakfast,” she said, heading off towards the cafeteria.
“You’re no fun,” I pouted, following.
We walked down the concrete path, it was quickly being covered with an inch of snow.
“I didn’t know you could have snow this early in the winter,” Erin said. “It’s not even officially winter yet! I mean, it’s only the third of November!” I said, skipping through the snow covered grass.
I scooped up a handful of snow and watched the loose flakes slowly melt. I picked up another, and smushed it together, making my first ever snowball. And Erin was my first ever target.
And my first ever snowball throw was a bulls eye. Erin turned around and glared at me, snow falling off the back of her head.
“What was that for?!”
”For being stingy,” I said.
“Stingy?? When was I stingy?” she asked, as we reached the mess hall.
I shrugged.
“Dunno. I just wanted an excuse to throw a snowball at you,” I said, smiling as we stepped into the warmth of the cavernous room.
I ate breakfast in a hurry, but Erin took her precious time. I finally managed to get her outside, and I threw another snowball right in her face. She got mad, and started throwing back, which was what I had wanted.
Soon, more kids joined in, and the weekend passed in a flurry of white, hot chocolate, wet clothes, and snow down your back. It was one of the best weekends I had ever had at Earenson. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I will never understand this…she’s so confusing! First you do this, then this, carry that….multiply by the divisor of the quotient times ten to the fourth power plus the numerator divided by the denominator canceling the x….,” I ranted, heading for the last class of the day on Monday, guitar.
“Will you stop?! You’re confusing me even more!” Erin said, as we sat down at our desks.
Everyone sat down excitedly, talking with their friends. Everyone was anxious to find out who would be going on tour and learning from Green Day. I didn’t care who it was. Probably gonna be some idiot who will hang all over them, more interested in them than learning anything useful.
Erin fidgeted next to me. I glanced at her.
“You’re nervous? You didn’t sign up, did you?!” I asked. “Nooo,” she said.
“Are you lying?” I asked, eyes narrowing.
“No, I’m not lying,” she said, glancing around the room nervously for Mr. Louis. I looked at her suspiciously for another minute, until Mr. Louis entered the room and asked for silence. It was given to him immediately.
“Now, I know you have all worked hard. I was very impressed with some of your efforts,” he began.
Everyone sat stock still and silent.
“But, sadly, I can only choose one of you…and I have made my decision,” he continued.
I rolled my eyes as a girl near the front let out an anxious squeak. This was so stupid…I rested my chin on my hand lazily, propping my elbow up on my desk.
“I was intrigued with this student’s ability of playing the guitar, and how she (there was a loud groan from the boys, realizing it wasn’t them) improvised new techniques and adapted quickly to new styles of music, since Green Day has many unique sounds,” Mr. Louis said, giving an apologetic smile to the guys.
“And so, I have chosen Karla Clore, to go learn from the best,” he said happily, clapping his hands together.
My elbow slipped off of the desk and I toppled over onto the floor. I blinked up at the ceiling as everyone tried to get a better look at me. Huh?! I stood up quickly, facing Mr. Louis.
“But! But--! BUT!” I said, shaking my finger at him. He raised an eyebrow.
“But what?” he asked, confused.
“I didn’t sign up!” I nearly shouted.
He frowned and picked up a clipboard. He went down the list with his index finger.
”Yes, you did. On the second day the paper was up…don’t you remember?” he asked.
I stared at him for a second.
“….No, I don’t,” I said slowly.
“Well…it was a while ago,” he said, looking at me slightly concerned.
“But…I don’t want to do this!” I protested. There was a cheer from the rest of the class, hopeful they could go instead.
Mr. Louis shook his head sternly at me.
“No. I want you to go. You have great potential, not only in guitar. Your vocal teacher says that you sound amazing, meant for a stage and live audience. And a band like Green Day has the perfect sound for you……why is it that you don’t want to go?” he asked.
“I—I…I…fine,” I said. What was I supposed to tell him? That I hated Billie Joe Armstrong with all my heart, because he killed my mother? And that I didn’t feel like sharing a stage with him? For some strange reason, I doubted he would have believed me…
Mr. Louis nodded. Everyone groaned at my acceptance.
“You will be leaving on Wednesday, taking a plane to New York City. You will meet the band there and get to know each other. Then, you will practice, and practice hard, because your first performance will be on Saturday night,” he said excitedly.
I sat back down in my chair, my legs not able to support me any longer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I don’t know HOW it happened!” I yelled into the phone that night, curled up under my covers. Erin sat on the floor, finishing History homework.
“Are you sure you didn’t sign up?” Diana asked for the thousandth time.
“YES, I’m sure,” I said.
“That’s strange….unless…,” Diana said.
“Unless what?” I asked, pulling my blankets to my chin.
“Unless, of course, you’re lying. And that you did sign up, because you couldn’t resist the thought of playing with Green Day, and seeing them again,” she said mischievously.
I mouthed wordlessly into the phone, and it took me a minute to get any words out of it.
“I am not lying! I hate them! Well, Billie Joe at least. I. HATE. HIM. Why would I do want to go see him?!” I said frustratedly into the phone.
Diana sighed.
“Dunno…well, at least you’ll surprise them when they see you come through the gate at the airport!” she said happily.
I groaned and talked with her for a little bit. Then I called Maria and told her about where I was going.
“That’s amazing! Aren’t you happy?” she asked.
“Of course I’m happy! I just don’t like long trips and the traveling and whatnot,” I said, making up excuses for my lack of enthusiasm.
“Oookay,” she said, not quite believing me, “I have good news too!”
”Really? What?” I asked.
“Weeell, I met this really nice guy last week…and I’ve been out with him several times…oh God, he is SO wonderful!” she said excitedly.
I laughed.
We talked a while longer, and I hung up ten minutes later.
I sighed and threw my phone into my lap. I had used my cell, since it didn’t really matter now, anyway.
“I didn’t sign up. I know I didn’t,” I said determinedly to Erin.
“Strange how these things work,” Erin said, mouth twitching. I looked at her. And then I realized.
“You! You!...You lil..!” I said angrily, staring at her. She doubled over in laughter.
“This is not funny! I can’t believe you did this to me!” I said.
“I did it FOR you, not TO you. It’s for your own good,” Erin said, putting her homework away into her book bag. I glared at her. She had signed me up after she realized I wasn’t going to.
“Uuugh!” I said, and flopped down onto my pillows.
“Good night to you too,” Erin said, climbing into bed and turning off the light.
